Jon Ericson

Assistant Professor, Bentley University

Jon is a multidisciplinary design leader, educator, cognitive scientist, and artist. He earned his Ph.D. in cognitive science from Brown University where he studied human visual perception and spatial cognition using virtual reality, and has been translating his unique background into products ever since, earning kudos from Forbes for his impact on UX at iZotope. Jon is an Assistant Professor at Bentley University, where he teaches and conducts research at the intersection of virtual reality (VR), user experience (UX) design, and human-computer interaction (HCI). Applications of his work include healthcare, environmental design, urban planning, games for impact, and creative interfaces.

While in graduate school at Brown University, Jon earned competitive grant funding from NASA and Brown, worked on research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), and led a redesign of Brown’s web-based course registration interface. His dissertation research used immersive virtual reality (VR) to study human visual perception, spatial memory/cognition, and navigation.

As a designer, Jon has worked on a variety of desktop, responsive web, print, and mobile projects for universities and businesses. The impact of Jon's unique background on iZotope’s user experience initiatives was recently discussed by Forbes magazine, and his team's work on flagship product, Ozone 6, earned a rare 10/10 rating from Computer Music, a top music industry publication. His team's work on Spire Recorder (iZotope) received a 2016 Webby nomination for Best User Interface alongside only four other apps (Tinder, Pandora, HBO, and Lonely Planet).

As a musician, Jon's work (Echo & Drake | has been featured in magazines, blogs, independent films, and by radio stations in the US and abroad. His band's debut album was recorded with Juno Award winning producer Joseph Donovan and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Jeff Lipton (Bon Iver, Jeff Tweedy / Wilco, Andrew Bird, Spoon), and in 2011 the album was named #1 Connecticut Album by The Hartford Courant's Eric Danton, a Rolling Stone contributing editor. In 2013 the band was one of 7 bands nominated for a chance to perform at the Grammys. Echo & Drake has also received two New England Music Award nominations and their music was recently featured by both Paste Magazine and American Songwriter.

 As a speaker and educator Jon has presented his work at numerous professional conferences, universities, public schools, and company events.
